Hans Schmidt

This steamship wreck still presents a mystery for many exlporers. It is known that is build in 1920. in Holland, it"s first name was Albireo. It's owner was Van Nievelt, Goudriaan & Co Company from Rotterdam. The ship was sold in 1939. to German Heinrich Schmidt from Flensburg and renamed to Hans Schmidt. On 24th of January ship hit the mine near the Island of Brijuni and sunk for a few minutes.

The Hans Schmidt wreck is situated near the Island of Brijuni and several miles from Pula. GPS System is needed for precise wreck location. The wreck lies vertical, steel body is almost undamaged except bow which is ripped from mine explosion and fully separated from the rest of the wreck. The foremast is braked down and lies near the ship. Nowadays the foremast might be seen in vertical position thanks to local diving centers and their leaders who helhed in that project. The mine exploded in altitude of fore cargo space. There can be seen merchandise and other interesting stuff. Near the cargo space, on the sea bottom can be spotted several avio-bombs. It is not known if they where a part of the ship"s merchandise. The captain bridge is destroyed, mainly because it was made of wood. Below the rudder can be seen ship's propeller which is digged into the bottom.
